Floating Rubbish

A river in the Balkans, known for its stunning natural beauty, has been transformed into a giant floating rubbish heap, amid a spell of bad weather, worsened by long-running mismanagement.

Tonnes of plastic bottles, rusty barrels, used tires, household appliances, driftwood and other waste have piled up behind a barrier in the Drina River in Bosnia-Herzegovina, which snakes through forested hills.

Much of this rubbish was dumped in poorly regulated riverside landfills or directly into the waterways that flow across three countries in the Balkans, accumulating behind the fencing as it flows downstream.

Health Concern

EURONEWS REPORT  Extracts

"Nursing saw a far more dramatic collapse in EU and EFTA migration around the time of the referendum, as mass recruitment ended and a new language test came in,” their analysis said.

‘It's all about reducing public spending'
At the heart of this is money.

“In the long run, funding hasn't kept up with demand on the service,” said Dayan, pointing out that chronic under-investment in staffing, as well as new buildings and equipment, had drastically reduced the capacity of hospitals to treat patients.

“Hospital beds are just very full,” he told Euronews.
“That makes it difficult to admit people and send them home in good shape.”

Explaining the Unexplained

A Poem

Why oh why...you ask yourself did your little child have to perish,
why did God take her so soon, something you truly did cherish?
And why did that kindly old man enjoying a walk in the snow
get shot by some kids -just for fun- was it really his time to go?

Addicted to Tablets

BBC News picture

A strange happening in England that they plan to help patients that are addicted to tablets provided by their doctor. According to the authorities that know better than the doctor, doctors are over prescribing heavy medicine to patients and turning people into drug addicts for prescription drugs. This is all very peculiar. Why are doctors giving their patients more than 4 weeks supply if they know that by continue taking these drugs that the person is going to need more help and more financial resources to break free. Surly here the onus lays with the prescribe-r.

Actually with the plan to cut out about 3000 Pharmacy's in England they may well cut down on prescriptions. It is already a pain in England to be able to get off the shelf in a Pharmacy some things that doctors prescribe. Living in a city one person was unable to get a hold of an ointment prescribed from any Pharmacy. May be Online Pharmacy's will be the only answer.

Sugar and Health

The following information was published by Roger Mason

Sugars are everywhere. Sugars are even in the health food stores. Most all soy milks (especially vanilla and cocoa) are sweetened with sugar (unsweetened soymilks are readily available). How can you keep your sugar intake as low as possible? Take the concept of desserts out of your life. Most Asian cultures do not have the concept of dessert. Limit your intake of fresh (local, not tropical) fruit to 10% of your diet. Do not drink fruit juice. Some people are sugar sensitive, and should not even eat fruit. Fruits contain sucrose (the same as white sugar) and fructose (the same as high fructose corn syrup). Don’t eat dried fruit. Don’t sweeten your tea, and you shouldn’t be drinking coffee anyway. (If you have a cup of coffee, drink it plain so you’ll enjoy it less.) Read your labels. You’ll find sugar in bread, soup, ketchup, salad dressing, cereals, crackers, and all kinds of foods you would never expect to find it. You find sugar everywhere in our society. One hundred and sixty pounds a year per person. No one else on earth does this.

Roman Concrete

Quotation from Science Alert

The ancient Romans were masters of building and engineering, perhaps most famously represented by the aqueducts. And those still functional marvels rely on a unique construction material: pozzolanic concrete, a spectacularly durable concrete that gave Roman structures their incredible strength.

Even today, one of their structures – the Pantheon, still intact and nearly 2,000 years old – holds the record for the world's largest dome of unreinforced concrete.
